105.5.24 High-Piled Storage

Specific Responsibilities for High-Piled Storage:

  • Maintain Approved Layout: You are responsible for ensuring the storage arrangement continuously conforms to the approved plans. This includes maintaining:
    • Aisle Widths: Aisles must be kept clear to their approved width at all times.
    • Maximum Storage Height: Do not store materials higher than the approved maximum height, which is often marked on the building structure or signs.
    • Flue Spaces: Transverse and longitudinal flue spaces between racks and pallets must be kept clear to allow for sprinkler water penetration.
  • Commodity Classification: Only store materials that match the commodity classification for which your sprinkler system was designed. Storing a higher-hazard commodity requires a permit revision and potential system upgrades.
  • Maintain Signage: Ensure that any required signs indicating maximum storage height or designating commodity classes are maintained and clearly visible.
  • Fire Safety & Evacuation Plan: If required for your facility, the Fire Safety and Evacuation Plan must be reviewed and updated as needed, and employees must be trained on its contents.
