105.5.32 Magnesium

Specific Responsibilities for Magnesium:

  • NO WATER: Water must never be used to extinguish a magnesium fire. You must maintain the approved supply of Class D extinguishing agent, sand, or other approved material near all processing areas.
  • Housekeeping: You must implement a strict and frequent housekeeping schedule to clean up all magnesium dust, shavings, and chips. Waste must be stored in labeled, covered metal cans.
  • Control Ignition Sources: You must strictly control all ignition sources. All tools must be non-sparking, and a hot work permit is required for any welding or cutting.
  • Storage: Store magnesium solids, parts, and scrap in a manner that prevents contact with water and is separated from other combustible materials.
  • Heat Treating Ovens: Ovens used for heat-treating magnesium must be of an approved type and have all safety controls maintained in working order.
