105.5.37 Open Flames and Torches

Specific Responsibilities for Open Flames and Torches:

  • Clear Combustibles: You must clear the work area of all combustible materials. Protect any nearby combustibles that cannot be moved with fire-resistive blankets.
  • Fire Watch: A competent person must serve as a fire watch during the operation and for at least 30 minutes after completion.
  • Fire Extinguisher: At least one portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 2-A:10-B:C rating must be immediately accessible.
  • Weather Conditions: In wildfire risk areas, do not operate torches or open-flame devices during windy conditions or when a Red Flag Warning is in effect.
  • LP-Gas Safety: If using a propane torch, ensure the cylinder is secured and that all hoses and connections are in good condition and free of leaks.
