105.5.9 Compressed Gases

Specific Responsibilities for Compressed Gases:

  • Secure Cylinders: All compressed gas containers, cylinders, and tanks must be secured to prevent falling at all times, whether full or empty.
  • Proper Storage & Segregation: You must store cylinders in the approved location. Incompatible gases (e.g., oxygen and acetylene) must be separated by the required distance (typically 20 feet) or a 5-foot-high, 30-minute fire-rated barrier.
  • Maintain Signage: All required signage, including NFPA 704 placards and signs identifying the contents of the storage area, must be maintained and clearly visible.
  • Caps and Valves: Valve protection caps must be secured in place whenever a cylinder is not in use. Cylinder valves must be kept closed when not in use.
  • Inventory Control: Maintain an accurate inventory of the gases on-site. The quantities must not exceed the amounts listed on your permit without prior approval.
