Catalytic Converter Prevention

Catalytic-Converter
The South San Francisco Police Department is seeing a recent uptick in catalytic converter thefts around our community. While these crimes declined for a period of time, thieves are once again targeting parked vehicles because catalytic converters contain valuable metals that can be quickly sold.

These thefts often happen overnight and can take less than two minutes, especially when vehicles are parked on the street or in darker areas.

A few simple steps can help reduce your risk:
  • Park in a well-lit area whenever possible
  • Use a garage if one is available
  • Avoid leaving vehicles parked in the same spot for long periods of time
  • Consider installing a catalytic converter shield, cage, or alarm system
  • If possible, park low-clearance vehicles close together to make access more difficult
  • Watch this video of Sergeant Mark Kosta walk through these tips
