Join us for a discussion of Sholem Aleichem's beloved Tevye the Dairyman — the classic Yiddish stories that gave the world Fiddler on the Roof. Through the voice of Tevye, a poor milkman navigating a changing world with humor, faith, and an awful lot of daughters, Aleichem captured something timeless about Jewish life, identity, and the tension between tradition and modernity. Whether you've read every word or just want to join the conversation, all are welcome. This event is part of SSFPL's Between Two Worlds series, presented in partnership with the Yiddish Book Center.
Then, stay for an evening screening of Fiddler: Miracle of Miracles, the acclaimed 2019 documentary that traces the surprising origins of Fiddler on the Roof — from Sholem Aleichem's Yiddish stories to Broadway phenomenon to global cultural touchstone. The film explores why this particular story, about a Jewish family on the edge of displacement, has resonated across so many different cultures and generations. A perfect companion to our book discussion, and a great entry point even if you're joining us just for the movie.
