Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) / Drone Operations

The South San Francisco Police Department uses Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, to support patrol operations and enhance community safety. A drone is an aircraft operated remotely from the ground, providing an aerial perspective that can greatly improve the efficiency and safety of police responses.

Our drones are used for a variety of public safety missions, including (but not limited to):

  • Scene documentation
  • Area searches for missing persons or evidence
  • Disaster response
  • Tactical operations
  • Critical incident management

Drone as a First Responder (DFR) Program

To further advance our capabilities, the South San Francisco Police Department has implemented a Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program. This program uses strategically placed docking stations throughout the city that allow drones to be launched remotely by trained operators.

When a 911 call is received, a drone can be deployed immediately, often arriving within minutes and before first responders. Once overhead, the drone provides real-time video and situational awareness to officers, firefighters, and paramedics. This early intelligence improves response efficiency, enhances safety for both the public and responders, and supports more informed decision-making during emergencies.
