Overview
This Mission Road Underground Utility District (UUD) Project focuses on the transition of overhead electric and communication lines into a shared underground trench system. This multi-agency effort includes participation from PG&E, AT&T, and Comcast. This initiative involves undergrounding approximately 2,500 linear feet of overhead electric and communication lines along Mission Road, from Grand Avenue to the southern entrance of the BART station.

Who will be performing this work?
The City has contracted with JDB and Sons Construction, Inc. for this project. Founded in 2007, JDB and Sons Construction has successfully delivered numerous infrastructure projects throughout the bay area.
Will there be road closures, traffic impacts, or access issues during construction?
Yes, there will be minimal traffic impacts with temporary lane closures during construction. Every effort will be made to maintain access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists at all times, including access to nearby driveways, throughout the construction period.
Will my electrical or internet service be affected during construction?
As the system transitions from overhead to underground, temporary interruptions to electric, telephone, and cable services may occur. These switchovers will be scheduled in advance, and all affected properties will receive prior notification.
What should be expected during construction?
Undergrounding is a complex process that must be completed in a specific sequence to ensure safety and efficiency:
- Trench Installation: Excavation of a shared trench to house utility infrastructure.
- Utility Placement: Placement of conduits and vaults for the City, PG&E, AT&T, and Comcast.
- Service Connections: Connecting individual properties and new streetlights to the underground system.
- Street Restoration: Backfilling trenches and repaving the roadway to restore existing conditions.
Construction Method: This project will use an open trench method, which involves excavating a narrow trench to install new conduits and vaults. This approach allows multiple utility lines to be placed within a single shared corridor, improving efficiency and minimizing overall construction impacts.
