What is AB 413 Daylighting Law?

Beginning January 1, 2025, California law says you cannot park within 20 feet of a crosswalk. This helps drivers and pedestrians see each other better and stay safe.

What does this mean?

  • This rule applies to all crosswalks, even if they are not painted on the street.
  • A crosswalk is basically anywhere sidewalks meet at an intersection.
  • You can still get a ticket even if there are no signs or red curbs.
Before AB 413: A car is parked within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, blocking the view between driversAfter AB 413: No parking within 20 feet of the crosswalk improves visibility for drivers and pedestrians

What will happen if you park there?

  • At first, you will get one warning.
  • After that, you can get a parking ticket.

To report parking concerns, contact LAZ Parking Enforcement at (650) 660-0512.

What is the City doing?

The City of South San Francisco is:

  • Prioritize painting red curbs in high-traffic areas and adding signs to show no-parking areas
  • Checking intersections to make sure they follow the new law
  • Working with police to enforce the rule and inform people
  • Focusing on busy areas, especially near schools and senior centers

Why does this matter?

  • Before: Parked cars near corners made it hard to see people crossing the street.
  • After: Keeping space clear near crosswalks helps prevent accidents and keeps everyone safer.

Goal:

Make streets safer so drivers and pedestrians can see each other clearly.

Our goal is to make South San Francisco safer by ensuring that all drivers and pedestrians have the visibility they need to navigate streets safely.
