Election & Voter Information

The City Clerk is the Elections Official for the City of South San Francisco. The role of the City Clerk in legislative and electoral processes requires neutrality and independence as key qualities in conducting the Office's business.


Statewide Direct Primary Election 

The Statewide Direct Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The City Clerk's Office provides voter registration forms during normal business hours. Election Information can be found on the San Mateo County Election website.

The last day to register to vote for the June 2, 2026, election is May 18, 2026


General Municipal Election 

The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The City of South San Francisco is a General Law City governed by a five-member City Council. Councilmembers are elected from five geographically defined districts, each for a four-year term with no term limits. Voters select one Council candidate from their district every four years. Terms are staggered: two seats are voted on in one election cycle and three in the next.

This November, South San Francisco voters will elect Council Members for Districts 1, 3, and 5, a City Clerk (at-large), and a City Treasurer (at-large).

The last day to register to vote for the November 3, 2026, election is October 19, 2026. 


CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES

Any member of the public who meets the requirements below may run for public Office in the City of South San Francisco: 

  • Be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of California.
  • Be a registered voter of the City of South San Francisco Council Districts 1, 3, and 5. 

CITY CLERK AND CITY TREASURER CANDIDATES

Any member of the public who meets the requirements below may run for public Office in the City of South San Francisco: 

  • Be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of California.
  • Be a registered voter of the City of South San Francisco.

Key Election Dates 

Nomination Period

The nomination period opens on July 13, 2026, and closes on August 7, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. (Elections Code § 10407).

Candidate Filing Process 

Candidates must obtain and complete official nomination documents issued by the City Clerk during the official nomination period. There is no fee for the issuance of nomination forms. However, there is a $1,056 deposit for filing a Candidate statement when submitting Nomination forms.  

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed 12 p.m.-1 p.m.) except for City holidays. Candidates will be required to provide their residential address to validate their current voter registration and eligibility status. 


Nomination Period Extended

If an eligible incumbent does not file by the deadline, the nomination period may be extended by five (5) days (Elections Code §§10407 and 10225). Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. 


Election Day 

Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.
