Renewable Energy from WestLight Energy
Clean energy - or creating a resilient and fossil fuel-free energy system - is a main goal of the City's Climate Action Plan. Click here for more information about the Climate Action Plan and other City plans and policies related to sustainability and resiliency.
As an important step towards achieving this goal, South San Francisco joined WestLight Energy (formerly Peninsula Clean Energy) in 2016. WestLight Energy is an energy consortium which includes all cities, towns, and the county government in San Mateo County. WestLight Energy provides a service that allows participants to purchase energy from renewable sources, such as wind and solar. This reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and lowers our greenhouse gas emissions. Click on the links below to learn more.

Questions & Responses
How does WestLight Energy work?
California law allows local communities to pool the electricity needs of business and residents, and purchase electricity directly from an energy producer. WestLight Energy (formerly Peninsula Clean Energy) is a "community choice aggregation" that provides electricity to all of the cities in San Mateo County, as well as the unincorporated areas. WestLight Energy purchases clean energy from renewable sources. Then, this clean energy is delivered to homes and businesses by PG&E over PG&E infrastructure. PG&E also manages the billing, maintenance, and repair of power lines and handles service requests calls.
Under California law, all residents and businesses in South San Francisco, and throughout the county, are automatically enrolled in WestLight Energy. However, you can opt to stay with PG&E as the source for your electricity if you so desire.
