105.5.19 Floor Finishing

Specific Responsibilities for Floor Finishing:

  • Control ALL Ignition Sources: You must eliminate all ignition sources in the work area, including pilot lights on appliances, electrical sparks, and smoking. Post "No Smoking" signs.
  • Ventilation: Mechanical ventilation must be operated continuously during the application and for the time specified by the finish manufacturer to exhaust flammable vapors to a safe location outdoors.
  • Proper Waste Disposal: All rags, steel wool, or other materials soaked with flammable liquids must be placed in a sealed, water-filled metal can and removed from the building at the end of each day.
  • Fire Extinguishers: At least one approved 2-A:20-B:C portable fire extinguisher must be located within 30 feet of the work area.
  • Public Exclusion: The work area must be secured to prevent entry by the public or other unauthorized individuals.
