105.5.7 Combustible Dust-Producing Operations

Specific Responsibilities for Combustible Dust:

  • Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA): You must review and update your DHA as required. All recommendations from the analysis must be implemented and maintained.
  • Housekeeping Program: You must rigorously adhere to a written housekeeping program designed to control dust accumulations. Dust layers must not exceed 1/32 of an inch (the thickness of a paper clip) in any area.
  • Dust Collection System: The dust collection system must be maintained in full working order. Regularly inspect ducts for buildup and ensure explosion protection features (e.g., venting, isolation) are not compromised.
  • Control Ignition Sources: You must strictly control all potential ignition sources, including static electricity, hot surfaces, and sparks, through grounding, bonding, and a hot work permit program.
  • Employee Training: Continuously train employees on the specific hazards of the combustible dust at your facility and the procedures for preventing fires and explosions.
