El Camino Real Mobility Plan
The City of South San Francisco is an active participant in the Grand Boulevard Initiative - a countywide effort to transform El Camino Real in San Mateo County. The Grand Boulevard Initiative relaunched in 2024 with a focus on multimodal transportation improvements along El Camino Real (State Route 82) from Daly City to Menlo Park.
Beginning in the summer of 2025, the City of South San Francisco launched the process to develop the El Camino Real Mobility Plan. This plan puts forth a South City-focused vision for El Camino Real that serves the residents, visitors, and destinations. The planning process included a year of community engagement, data analysis, and development of concept designs.
Since El Camino Real is owned by the State, any changes to the street must go through a specific Caltrans process. On July 8, 2026, the City Council adopted a Resolution advancing two alternatives to the Caltrans project development process, as shown below.

As a next step, SamTrans and City staff will work with Caltrans to review these alternatives and move one alternative forward to the detailed design phase.
