The City of South San Francisco is currently designing physical improvements to the streets adjacent to Martin Elementary School, based on community input gathered in 2022 and 2023. Once completed, the project will enhance safety and accessibility for everyone in the neighborhood, especially students and families walking or biking to and from school.
The City of South San Francisco completed a temporary demonstration project to investigate and analyze the impacts, benefits, and challenges of converting School Street in front of Martin Elementary (between Olive Avenue and Maple Avenue) to a one-way operation.
This project is being implemented as a result of feedback received from local residents and Martin Elementary staff and students to consider making this segment a one-way street for safer walking and biking to and from school. During the demonstration, the City collected traffic data to analyze impacts and assess long-term feasibility.
Feedback from this short-term demonstration will help determine if the one-way operation could be implemented permanently. The proposed change would also include minor temporary physical improvements—such as barriers and signage—to encourage compliance.
Timeline: August 25 – September 12, 2025 (completed)
