April is Fair Housing Month, a time to recognize that everyone deserves equal access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. The City of South San Francisco is committed to promoting fair and equitable housing opportunities and raising awareness about residents’ rights under federal and state fair housing laws.

Know Your Rights

Housing discrimination is illegal. Federal fair housing laws protect residents from discrimination based on:

  • Race or color
  • National origin
  • Religion
  • Sex or gender
  • Disability
  • Familial status (having children)

California state law provides additional protections, including:

  • Marital status
  • Military and veteran status
  • Source of income
  • Licensed daycare providers
  • Age
  • Primary language
  • Immigration status
  • Arbitrary characteristics
  • Gender identity and sexual orientation

These protections apply when renting, buying, financing, or living in your home.

Watch for Warning Signs

Residents should be aware of potential fair housing violations, including:

  • Being told a unit is unavailable when it is still listed
  • Different rental terms, deposits, or rules for different people
  • Refusal to rent to families with children
  • Refusal to allow reasonable accommodations for disabilities
  • Steering renters or buyers to certain neighborhoods

If something feels unfair, it may be discrimination.

You Have the Right To

  • Apply for housing without discrimination
  • Request reasonable accommodations or modifications for disabilities
  • Equal access to housing opportunities
  • Fair and consistent rental or purchase terms
