A Hometown Celebration for America's 250th Anniversary

Nearly 2,000 residents, families, and visitors filled downtown South San Francisco to celebrate America's 250th anniversary at the South City 4th of July Parade and Picnic, creating the kind of hometown atmosphere that has become a hallmark of South City.
From the morning parade to the afternoon festivities along Grand Avenue, neighbors gathered to celebrate with live music, local organizations, family activities, food, classic cars, and patriotic traditions. The event was intentionally designed to bring the community together, and throughout the day, residents did just that by reconnecting with neighbors, supporting local businesses, and creating new memories with family and friends.
The celebration began with a community parade featuring City Councilmembers, California District 15 Congressman, Kevin Mullin, local nonprofits and community organizations such as the Kiwanis Club of South San Francisco, Italian American Citizens’ Club, Girl Scouts and the South San Francisco Women's Club, the Golden State Rods and Padrinos car clubs, and other local participants who proudly represented the spirit of South City.
Following the parade, the official ceremony opened with the Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Color Guard, followed by a stirring performance of the National Anthem by local vocalist Flora Hui. Throughout the afternoon, the South City Brass Quintet and Fast Times kept the celebration going with live performances that had residents singing and dancing along to favorites like YMCA and Purple Rain.
Families enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the day, including games, jump houses, community booths, classic vehicles, free hot dogs, and the adorable Patriotic Pet Costume Contest, where Raya, a dachshund dressed in festive red, white, and blue, took home top honors.
The celebration was made possible through the collaboration of City staff, community partners, volunteers, and generous sponsors: Genentech, South San Francisco Scavengers, and the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.
As South San Francisco continues commemorating America's 250th anniversary throughout the year, the Fourth of July celebration served as a reminder that while traditions bring us together, it is the people of South City who make those traditions meaningful. Judging by the smiles, conversations, dancing, and packed sidewalks throughout the day, the City's vision of creating a welcoming hometown celebration was a resounding success.
