105.5.20 Fruit and Crop Ripening

Specific Responsibilities for Ripening:

  • Gas Detection: If required, the gas detection system must be maintained, calibrated, and tested in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Control Ignition Sources: You must eliminate all potential ignition sources from the ripening room. All electrical wiring and equipment must be rated for the hazardous location.
  • Ventilation: The ventilation system must be maintained to ensure it operates effectively to prevent the accumulation of flammable gases.
  • Secure Gas Supply: All ethylene gas cylinders must be secured, and the piping and distribution system must be maintained and inspected regularly for leaks.
  • Maintain Signage: Hazard identification signs indicating the presence of flammable gas and "No Smoking" signs must be maintained on the entrances to the ripening room.
