Cruising as a Community

On Saturday, May 9, in recognition of National Bike Month, the City of South San Francisco hosted its first South City Centennial Cruise. Spearheaded by Vice Mayor Mark Nagales, the goal of the event was to reinforce civic pride and to enhance South San Francisco’s lively bike culture.
As early as 9:00 am, participants gathered at Centennial Way Park South (CWPS) in front of the pump track and skate park where they were provided with free air, brake, and chain (ABC) checks courtesy of South San Francisco’s (soon to be) newest bike shop, Six Cycles. Participants also received free accessories such as bike lights, name tags, knit caps (to name a few) which were provided by San Mateo County Office of Education’s Safe Routes to School Program. Participants also had the chance to provide feedback on the City’s El Camino Real Mobility Plan for prizes.
At 10:00 am, approximately thirty participants of all ages “cruised” from CWPS all the way to SSF BART (exactly 2 miles). Along the way, riders acknowledged SSF landmarks including SSF High School, construction of the new Boys and Girls Club on W. Orange Ave., Orange Memorial Park dog park, Library | Parks and Recreation Building and Police Station. After a quick water break at SSF Bart, riders cruised back to CWPS. Upon their return, participants were able to enjoy a celebratory birthday cake with Vice Mayor Mark Nagales (in recognition of his birthday).
The City of South San Francisco thanks Six Cycles and Safe Routes to School, in addition to SSF Scavengers Company for providing complimentary containers for responsible waste, for their contributions in making this a great community event.
