SSF Community Delivers More Than 70,800 Diapers for Local Families

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 20, 2026 - What started as a goal to fill a critical gap for local families has grown into one of South San Francisco's biggest community success stories.
Thanks to the generosity of residents, businesses, and community partners, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1507’s Diaper Drive collected more than 70,800 diapers at this year’s Touch-A-Truck event hosted by the South San Francisco Fire Department. The overwhelming support came as more than 800 residents attended the event, more than doubling last year's attendance of 300 people and surpassing last year’s total of approximately 8,500 diapers.
The Diaper Drive was created after the YMCA Community Resource Center lost access to a nonprofit diaper supplier, forcing the organization to purchase diapers at full retail cost and leaving many local families without adequate support. The South San Francisco Firefighters Charity Foundation stepped in to help bridge the gap with a grant from Genentech, by launching a community-wide diaper drive in partnership with the YMCA in 2025.
"This is what South City does best," said Vice Mayor Mark Nagales. "When we learn that our neighbors need help, our community doesn't hesitate, it comes together. Collecting more than 70,800 diapers isn't just an incredible number; it's thousands of moments of relief for parents and healthier starts for children throughout our community."
Throughout the year, residents continuously filled diaper collection bins at each fire station, with diapers of all sizes, while Touch-a-Truck became both a family celebration and the campaign's signature collection event.
"We knew there was a need, but we never imagined the community would respond like this," said Anthony Fisicaro, spokesperson of IAFF Local 1507. "Every diaper donated represents a family who can focus a little less on making ends meet and a little more on raising their child. We're incredibly proud of what South San Francisco accomplished together."
"Touch-a-Truck has always been about connecting with our community," said Fire Chief Matt Samson. "This year, it became something even bigger. Families came to explore our vehicles, meet first responders, and left knowing they made a real difference in someone else's life."
The diapers will continue to support families served through the YMCA Community Resource Center, helping reduce one of the most significant monthly expenses faced by parents with young children.
